But here's what almost nobody notices: the building is technically the nation's living memorial to JFK, which is why there's no admission fee to walk in — the whole place is funded as a monument, not just a concert hall. Wander the halls and you'll find gifts from over forty countries tucked into corners, tapestries, sculptures, marble from Italy. The Grand Foyer runs 630 feet — longer than the Washington Monument is tall, laid on its side. Walk its red carpet at dusk and the floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Potomac going gold. Free performances happen daily, and free guided tours too. The rooftop terrace is the real prize, open and overlooked, with a sweeping river-and-Georgetown view most visitors miss entirely. One thing: that "12-minute walk" from Foggy Bottom is mostly uphill and unshaded on the return. Catch the free Kennedy Center shuttle from the station instead — it runs every fifteen minutes and saves your legs.
